Wits midfielder Alexander ready to fight for league title
Though there is still uncertainty over when the Absa Premiership will resume, Bidvest Wits midfielder Cole Alexander says he is prepared to fight for the title on the league’s return.
They are up against Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates, who are also contesting for the trophy.
It has been nearly three months since the postponement of all the remaining PSL matches for the season due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
The Clever Boys are sixth on the log with three games in hand.
They are just 10 points behind log-leaders Chiefs, who are on 48 points with two matches in hand.
Wits are still to play Amakhosi twice (home and away), Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu, Maritzburg United, Bloemfontein Celtic, Golden Arrows, Black Leopards and Polokwane City before the season closes.
However, the 30-year-old remains positive that his team still stands a pretty good chance of clinching the league title.
“I want to fight for every point,” Alexander said.
“Mathematically speaking, we still stand a chance to win the league.
“We have two matches against Chiefs, we can upset the league and a lot of people.
“So I want to throw a curve ball in there and fight for the league and at least get maximum points.”
Alexander said when the league did reopen it needed to be a safe environment so that players did not return home and put their families at risk of contracting Covid-19.
“As footballers we are all healthy people, but what if we get it [Covid-19] and go back home and we infect our grannies and uncles that have underlying diseases?
“So I think for me I would feel more comfortable if there are protocols taken and there is not much risk involved, so that we don’t go home and infect other people.
“At the same time I have been watching the Bundesliga. I watched about two games and, honestly, for me it really just looked like a training game.
“I didn’t feel excited for the game, there were no fans, and that is also how I realised how important a role supporters play in the game.
“As much as footballers need to be focused and do our jobs, I think the fans bring something that makes the players to also want to do better.”
