Develop eco-friendly nappies

- Sheelagh Day, Greenshields Park, Port Elizabeth

IN Wednesday’s The Herald there was a very interesting article on recycling of plastic (“Clutching at straws in plastic recycling”).

We heard on the news about the whale that had 8kg of plastic in its stomach and got beached.

This led to Leanne Manas telling us that Woolworths was going to do something in connection with recycling.

Perhaps it is following SPAR that has started the ball rolling, although it is still selling its plastic bags.

Reasoning is that “not everyone is happy to pay R1.99 (I think that’s the correct amount) for their new paper bags”.

I understand, but the environment is important.

Those who still buy them should re-use them instead of throwing them out, anywhere they like.

Just fold them and place back in your handbags and hey presto, you’ve got your bags with you!

This brings me to my question: nappies are no longer towelling, but plastic and take an age to dissolve, so surely some bright spark can invent a different type?

Most mothers work these days, so towelling is perhaps not the answer. But in the “old days” we managed to wash our nappies out, then either into the machine (if you were lucky enough to have one) or were left to soak and then were washed – and we still went to work.

So there you have it, what about the millions of nappies that are thrown onto our tips?
