Race for Masters League second place hots up

WITH just one round of matches, the race for the runner-up spot in the Nelson Mandela Bay Masters League is still wide open.

Volkswagen beat PE All Stars in an eight-goal thriller at the Stinging Bees field on Sunday, to draw level with Stars in second place on the log.

Nkosinathi Tiya led the charge for Volkswagen with a brace.

Thozamile Ngesi, Thembela Makhasi and Abongile Mpambani added a goal apiece.

Luzuko Hambaze, Monde Tyaliti and Luthando Maxela scored for Stars, who remain ahead on goal difference.

Eleven Attackers, just a point behind Stars and VW, had a walkover against Zwide Masters.

Meanwhile, Ama-units – who had already secured the title with three matches to spare – had a walkover against tailenders New Brighton.

Gqebera came close to causing the upset of the weekend when they held Young Pirates to a 2-2 draw, at the Walmer High School field.

Veli Korsten and Wandile Msipha scored for Gqebera, who are just two places away from the bottom of the log.

Ayanda Hlakuva and Ntsikelelo Mdepha replied for Pirates.

In another surprise, Steve Tshwete Villagers were held to a 2-2 draw by struggling Soweto.

Kagiso Lebuso (Villagers) and Masande Ntete (Soweto) each scored a brace.

In a battle of the tailenders, Joe Slovo scored their biggest win of the season, thrashing Eberspache­r 5-2.

TOMORROW Stars caused the shock of the season in the SafaNMB Women’s League when they beat African Chiefs in a Stream A fixture on Sunday to record their first points of the season. Chiefs are second on the log. As a result of the loss, Chiefs failed to close in on log-leaders Highbury, who had a bye.

It was a disappoint­ing weekend for Shatterpru­fe. They drew 0-0 with NMMU Madibaz and lost 2-0 to PE United.

In the only Stream B fixture, Dower United beat joint tailenders Rainbow Stars 2-0 to retain their top-log position.
