PORT Elizabeth book clubs are invited to the premiere of Alison, the “triumphant true tale of monsters, miracles and hope”, at NuMetro cinemas in Walmer next week Thursday August 11.

The film centres on Alison Botha, a former The Herald Citizen of the Year and celebrated motivational speaker who has inspired thousands of people with the story of how she survived a vicious rape and assault in 1994 at a Port Elizabeth beach. The book, I Have Life, has been re-released with a new chapter to coincide with the movie launch.

The film, based on I Have Life, features actress Christia Visser as Botha, and all proceeds from next week’s premiere will go to Port Elizabeth NGO Unity in Africa (Uina), towards its Women of Worth programme, for which Botha is ambassador.

Uina general manager Berenice Rose thinks book clubs will enjoy the film, as “it is ultimately a story of hope.

“This brings it full circle back to PE, where it started. It touched so many lives here and is so real as we remember her story so well,” said Rose. “We are inviting book clubs to attend the premiere in place of their August book club meeting.

“Instead of spending your R100 on books, spend R130 on this. I’d also like to encourage the book clubs to bring along their ‘other’!”

Already the Bay’s Lamplight Book Club has pledged its August subs for the premiere. The 7.30pm screening will be preceded by a cheese and wine at 6.30pm, followed by a Q&A with Botha who will also sign books and autographs.

Since being published in 1998, I Have Life has remained on the Penguin SA bestseller’s list. The film Alison has received critical acclaim at several international film festivals.
