Scheduled competitions make Bay angler’s paradise
ANGLING is all about freedom: the freedom you experience when out in the open with the wind in your face, sun on your skin and the sounds of nature along with the sunrises and sunsets that leave incredible memories in your mind. It is quite addictive. We enter the angling competition time this month. Most of our local clubs have an agenda this time of year for a competition in some or other format.
The three major angling establishments in the Bay have their yearly competitions this following weekend and there is plenty of cash and hardware up for grabs in all these events.
ý The Rod Club have their annual Skins competition next Saturday and Sunday from 10am. It has been a calendar event for decades and is iconic in its own right.
This year they will fish with a difference. There will be no slaughter of fish for points, but catch and release only. Inquiries: (041) 466-1960.
ý The Noordhoek Ski Boat Club has their 29th annual angling
competition, formerly known as the Stockfish Derby, which has taken on a new format and is now the Fishaways Noordhoek Derby.
This year’s event, which will be held next Saturday, will be a five-species competition.
The species are yellowtail, geelbek, carpenter, gurnard and stockfish.
Editorial space, however, does not allow me to elaborate on details beyond the five species event and how a small fish can beat a large fish at the scale!
The competition will bring a unique aspect to species angling. The prize-giving will be at 4pm on May 2. Inquiries: 082-320-3945.
The competition also caters for smaller craft and kayaks, with numerous charities to benefit from the proceeds.
The BLG Logistics Tuna Classic this Thursday from sunrise to 4pm needs no introduction and is one of the grandest competitions on the South African angling calendar.
Weigh-in takes place daily from 4pm. The array of prizes and cash speaks for the enormity of this competition, which is supported by the pride of South Africa’s big game anglers who return yearly to duel it out on the water beyond the horizon.
This year the beneficiary will the Cape Recife School, which will receive playground equipment for the children.
The Bay will be an angler’s paradise next weekend and the many prizes on offer are not just for the accomplished angler. There will also be attendance prizes and lucky draws.
Each establishment and generous sponsors have gone out of their way to cater for all.
Just being in attendance is a family outing on its own, with food and beverages, as well as entertainment available.
Don’t miss out on the occasion, even if you don’t angle!
