Coffee on tap for the love of rhinos
WHAT does a special all-African Arabica coffee blend have in common with efforts to protect our precious rhino national heritage?
In addition to sharing the name ‘Chipembere’, they are both part of a collaboration of love and legacy.
The Chipembere Rhino Foundation, a local registered non-profit and public benefit organisation, was founded on love and legacy five years ago by conservationist Brent Cook after his beloved rhinos Chippy, Isipho and later Geza were viciously poached on Amakhala Game Reserve and Kariega Game Reserve.
“They are gone, but never forgotten,” Cook says. “Their legacy lives on through the Chipembere Rhino Foundation, which comprises a devoted team of conservation specialists committed to the protection and conservation of Africa’s rhino and whose incredible work in South Africa has received noteworthy praise and recognition.”
Chipembere is also the name of a special all-African Arabica coffee blend created by Mastertons Coffee & Tea Specialists in a collaboration of love and legacy.
“It was love for his future wife that literally moved Ronald John ‘Jock’ Masterton to relocate to the coastal town of Port Elizabeth in 1924, where he founded Mastertons Coffee & Tea Specialists,” Ryler Masterton explained. The company roasts and supplies speciality coffee, flavoured dessert coffee blends, a variety of teas and coffee accessories, and also specialises in custom blending.
“Nine decades and three generations later, the Masterton legacy is synonymous with being master roasters and blenders of top quality Arabica coffee.”
For every 250 grams of Chipembere coffee purchased by retailers and coffee-loving rhino supporters, R5 is donated to the Chipembere Rhino Foundation to aid their rhino conservation efforts.
