Chippa United coach Dan Malesela is positive ahead of the new season, with the club having kept most of their key players that helped the team finish in the top half of the Premiership for the first time in the club’s history.

“We are ready to compete, and will challenge for all trophies on offer this season,” Malesela said on the club’s official website.

“I am happy that we have the core of the team that finished well last season. If you look at the spine, Daniel (Akpeyi), James (Okwuosa), we still have Thami (Sangweni), Manzini (Rhulani), (David) Zulu, Ace (Andile Mbenyane) and the other guys.”

The club has already brought in Menzi Masuku, Thembinkosi Lorch and Mpho Mvelase, all from Orlando Pirates.

“This is very important, but we needed to strengthen and I am delighted with the quality we have brought in. Competition for places is fierce and this will push the players to do well,” he added.

The Chilli Boys open their season with a home game against Free State Stars at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium today. Last season Ea Lla Koto got the better of the them winning 3-0 in their first league meeting, but United were able to avenge themselves with a 2-0 win in the second round.

Chippa will be missing goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi who was part of the Nigerian squad at the Rio Olympic Games, while Stars will be missing Makhahleni Makhaula, who is out injured.

Elsewhere today, Baroka FC will be making their PSL debut with a home game against Ajax Cape Town at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
