Coach Tembo hedges bets over league

- Michaelson Gumede

Kaitano Tembo (above) is undecided as to whether his SuperSport United side can be considered as contenders for the Absa Premiership. The Matsatsantsa mentor has taken his side within two points of joint leaders Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

“If you look at it now from No 1 to No 7, anything can happen. We just have to keep fighting, keep pushing and keep getting the points and as the games become less and less, the picture will start coming out, but from the top up to seventh place, anyone can win it,” said Tembo.

“Sundowns, Pirates, Bidvest Wits, Chiefs and us, we still need to play each other. So it is still a long way to go and we need to concentrate and make sure we keep up the performances we are giving in week in and week out and we will be okay.

“What is important is to put in the performances which we have being displaying for the past four games. We want to take it game by game and the next game is important because it is Chiefs,” added Tembo, whose side are coming off the back of a 1-0 against Free State Stars and play Chiefs Friday in Mbombela.

“We beat Free State Stars at the death because of our fighting spirit. We didn’t deserve to drop any points. They were falling back and waiting to catch us on the break and that was their game throughout the 90 minutes,” said Tembo.

That win came courtesy of a Mxolisi Macuphu stoppage-time goal, which was his fourth in the league for United.

“Jamie Webber did well to find Macuphu with his cross and I told him to stay in the box and no longer go to the side because Jamie was going to put the ball in the box.

“Macuphu has been a very important player for us, I am very happy with his performances,” said Tembo.
