HISTORIC TOUR: TWO RACES FOR SKF PRE-1966 LEGEND SALOON CARS TOP THE DAY’S EVENTS

Pre-1990 and Pre1968 Le Mans Sports and GT cars will be competing together.

South African historic car racing will return to its natural home at Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria this Saturday, with the venue to host round two of the 2018 Historic Tour.

Topping the day’s events will be two races for SKF Pre-1966 Legend Saloon Cars.

Victory favourites must include Jeffrey Kruger (TAR Plymouth Baracuda), Jonathan du Toit (TAR Chev Nova), Lee Thompson (TAR Ford Galaxie) and Ben Morgenrood (Ford Mustang).

Frontrunne­rs in the Under Two-litre class will be Tom Campher Cars Volvo 122S drivers Vic Campher and Alan Poulter, Ben van der Westhuizen (Lotus Cortina), Robyn Kruger (Alfa GT), Rob Gearing (BMW 2002ti) and Roger Housten (CTR Alfa Romeo Giulietta).

Josh Dovey (Austin Healey), Ishmael Baloyi (TAR GSM Dart), Keith van Heerden (Jaguar D-Type), Jaco Taylor (Alfa Giulia) and Stephen Britz (MGB) could be podium chasers in the races for SKF Pre-1966 Little Giants.

Others to watch are Les McLeod (MGB Roadster), Chris Visagie (Ford Anglia), Mel Spurr (Ford Consul 315) and Mark van Rooyen (Sunbeam Alpine).

The sports car races will see Pre-1990 and Pre-1968 Le Mans Sports and GT cars competing together, and they should provide the day’s quickest lap times. Victory favourites should include Larry Wilford (Genie Lola T70), Warren Lombard (AC Cobra), Jonathan du Toit (Ecosse Mk2), Terry Wilford (Porsche 917), Peter Bailey (Ford GT40), Mark Lauth (Lola T70) and Dalais Junior (Ford GT40).

Heading up the Historic Single Seater entry will be Formula Atlantic cars, driven by Neil Lobb ( Chevron B29), Peter Kernick (Ralt RT4 Mazda) and Colin Ellison (Ralt RT4 Mazda). Challengin­g them

in terms of sheer pace should be Paul Manegold (Pilbeam), Jimmy Dunn (Gecko Mk4) and AJ Kernick (Dulon F3).

The Charlie Superspar Pursuit handicap races will see a large contingent of varied cars taking to the tarmac. Though difficult to predict, possible winners should include Rob van Aarle (Ford Escort), Gary Stacey (Ford XR6), Robbie Frank (Lotus 23B), Johan Swanepoel (Alfa Berlina), Kola de Klerk (Nissan 300Z), Ken Price (Datsun GX Coupe) and Mike Thompson (Ford Capri).

Andrew Horne (Van Diemen) will be the man to beat in the Formula Ford Kent races, chased by people like Graham Hepburn (Van Diemen), Alex Vos (Formula Ford), Dean Venter (Mygale), David Jermy (Van Diemen) and Jeff Gable in his Van Diemen.

Adding flavour to proceeding­s will be two races for the Bridgeston­e BMW Club Racing series contenders, with victory favourites to include Jan Eversteyn (BMW E36 328i), Rick Loureiro (BMW E30 325iS), David Coetzee (BMW E36 328i Turbo), Paulo Louriero (BMW M3) and Warren Dodd (BMW E90).

Jeffrey Kruger (Lotus 7) will doubtlessl­y start as the winning favourite in the LEET Racing Lotus Challenge events, chased by drivers like David Jermy (Lotus Taylon), Richard Benningfie­ld (Caterham 7), Rob Gearing (Birkin 7), Sean Hewitt (Birkin S3), Etienne Strydom (Birkin 7) and Len Marshall Lotus 7).

The Marlboro Crane Hire races for Pre-1980 Historic Saloons should see Johan Smith (Mazda Capella), Phillip Pantazis (Datsun 240Z), Colin Ellison (Ford Fairlane), Martin Botha (Datsun GX Coupe), Mario Rossi (Alfa Romeo GTV6), Neil Lobb (Fiat 131) and Gerhard Henning (VW Scirocco) fighting at the front end. – Historic Racing Correspond­ent
