Talk of the Town

We live in a caring community

- ... with Simon Oliver

I am often asked by friends that stay in “the Big Smoke”, “But what do you do down there?” and “Why do you live in a small town?”

Well, the fact is that I love living in Kenton. First, because many services are not readily available, I have taught myself to do a lot of things that others would have done for me in Johannesburg or Cape Town.

I have more time to do the things I enjoy doing. Cooking, gardening and a bit of handiman work! I find I have time to be constructive and be inquisitive … I may write an article about being inquisitive!

But the reason I like living in Kenton is that we have a caring community. Many people use the time they have to uplift and support those close to them.

It may be in feeding schemes, schooling and improving the conditions in our community.

This happens through organisations such as Rotary, the Lions, Round Table and Hospice.

Some people say that one of the disadvantages of living in small communities is that everyone seems to know everyone’s business or if they don’t know they certainly want to!

This may be so, but it also means that we find out quickly when someone needs help or support and can react.

Being a semi-retirement village, death is a frequent visitor and it is good to know that we don’t have to cope with it on our own.

Support always comes, from those close to us and more often than not from strangers who care.

I love living in Kenton for these reasons and so many more. I look forward to hearing why you live down here in the Eastern Cape. You can contact me on
