Keiskamma Music Academy to perform in Port Alfred
In the tiny village of Hamburg there are 135 youngsters playing classical music instruments.
Starting from humble beginnings, the Keiskamma Music Academy has performed locally and in Oxford, in the UK, and their namesake town of Hamburg, Germany.
The academy was founded more than a decade ago by Johannesburg Philharmonic flautist Helen Vosloo who went to Hamburg on holiday, and left having established a music academy that has transformed the lives of hundreds of youngsters over the years.
Port Alfred residents have the chance to see these skilled young musicians performing at St Paul’s Anglican Church on April 13. Tickets cost R75 for adults or R40 for children, and are on sale at KNA in Port Alfred or at the door.
The show starts at 2.30pm. Refreshments will be on sale.
The Keiskamma Art Project will also be at St Paul’s, selling artworks made by some 110 previously unemployed women in the Hamburg area. The art project is internationally acclaimed, with its major works having toured in Canada, the US, UK and Germany.
The famous 122m-long Keiskamma Tapestry is on permanent display in parliament. It has also made commissions for the 500th anniversary of the Royal College of Physicians and its founder, Dr Carol Baker, has been made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College, as well as receiving many other awards, including an honorary doctorate from Rhodes University.
