Sunday World (South Africa)

Kodwa, Mr Minister, why did they turn off the tap leaving us dry?

-

Yours in mgosi, Shwa, zig-zagged the provinces and drove all the way to sleepy North West after she was blessed with the privilege of attending the 17th SA Sports Awards at the grand Sun City Superbowl last Sunday night.

The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture pulled out all the stops in making the night a memorable one for the nominees, the guests and the hangers-on.

People adhered to the dress code and they arrived on the red carpet looking the part, even the local rural wannabes stepped up and used the much-rested waslap to full effect.

While the succulent oxtail that was served was grossly underrated, the same cannot be said about the drinks. It was a nightmare. Revellers waited for almost four hours before they could order drinks of any sort to quench their thirst.

This was apparently done to avoid floor disturbance by the waiters and drunken party goers, you know the malume-type who can’t handle their tipple.

But the organisers would do well in future to at least give the people some water – after all, water is a very important aspect in the ANC’S election manifesto for the coming elections.

When the waters of immortality finally arrived, the organisers closed the bar tap faster than you can say “hey waiter” – much to the chagrin of the guests who were forced to dig deep into their pockets to buy the cheap Sun City-branded red/dry wine.

But nonetheless, hosts Andile Ncube and Vusiwe Ngcobo looked stylish in their various outfits but the auto-cue came in handy and elevated them to superstar level.

North West MEC for sports, arts and culture Kenetswe Mosenogi is a vibe, and good lord is she full of beans! Likeable as she is, the MEC needs to take it easy on the decibels.

Shwa swears her screaming left many an ear hard of hearing. Every time she grabbed the microphone, the audience scurried to cover their ears. We left the venue with our eardrums violated and needing therapy. Let’s lower the volume, shall we, ma’am?

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa and his wife were a breath of fresh at the after party. They posed for pics with every Tom, Dick and Mary that asked for a snap as they grooved into the morning.

Overall it was a real, enjoyable event with less VIP people and more real people. Phambili with the masses, phambili!

Springbok star Manie Libbok won the Newcomer of the Year and looked dapper in his SA colours blazer. Pity his stunning fiancée followed him everywhere. like a lovelorn puppy – breakfast, reception and probably to the toilet. She almost ascended to the stage as well when his name was called for the award.

We never really rated stand-up comedian and host Shampoonaiza until the night of the awards. He really unleashed some smoking-hot material and left the audience in stitches throughout. He is maturing like fine wine.

Radio host and personality Thando Thabethe was also there, trying by all means to dodge the cameras. You can dribble the cameras, mogirl, not Shwashwi.

Shwa is still wondering what was she doing there in the first place when all she wanted to do was hide from the cameras throughout the night.

Moshe Ndiki was very entertaining in his role as one of the hosts. He did the red carpet gig like a pro and had the relevant ideas.

Mama Ria Ledwaba, Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Andile Dlamini and former netball star Bongiwe Msomi were some of the female sport personalities in glittering outfits.

Well done ladies!
