Fierce bidding expected for North Coast mansion

Four-level home offers sea views, security and a hi-tech pool

- Jan de Beer

AUCOR will call for bids for a mansion in Blythedale Beach, north of Ballito, on February 20.

Number 3 Garrick Road is close to essential amenities and only about 30 minutes’ drive from King Shaka International airport.

The auction will be held at 11am in the Aucor boardroom at 16 Imvubu Park Place, Riverhorse Valley, Durban.

The 500m² house was completed in 2007 following a design by architect Raymond Gielink, who planned it as a flagship eight bedroom/seven bathroom, bedand-breakfast establishment for his family to run as a business.

The current owners took occupancy in 2014 and used the house as a four-bedroom home with three separate offices, with the eighth bedroom serving as upstairs lounge.

There are now six bathrooms of which three have been modernised.

“Many of the spaces have been upgraded to match the stately modern appearance of this four-level building,” says Aucor’s Rona Pillay, who is handling the sale.

The front of the house overlooks a green belt conservancy views.

To the southern side, the property has direct gated access to a large park. and offers sea

Pillay says the semiraised pool was built in 2017 to create a stately feel in the entertainment area.

“No expense was spared on creating this low-maintenance, stylish, hi-tech pool with hidden remote-controlled pump, deck illumination, digital temperature display, and below-deck storage area.

“The stone feature wall has an 800mm letterbox water spout and blends well with the Tiki Bar and minideck at the other end of the garden.

“The garden has three main areas: a low-maintenance indigenous garden, a raised pool garden with irrigated lawn, and a typical Kwazulu-natal back garden on the slope above the rear retaining wall.

“The property is secured all around with high walls, electric gates, two channel intercom which dials the homeowners’ cellphones, and a CCTV system which covers the entire perimeter.

“Aucor has experienced strong interest in this truly upmarket property from all over South Africa and we expect exceptionally fierce bidding,” she says.

A PRE-PRODUCTION Honda CB750 motorcycle – one of just two survivors of the four hallowed four-cylinder models made – will be on offer at an auction of classic motorcycles at the National Motorcycle Museum in Bickenhill in the UK on March 4.

This historically important Honda CB750 is expected to fetch up to £40000 (about R665000). A “late” pre-production model, it is one of two still known to exist: the other is in the US and was sold on ebay in 2014 for a staggering $148 000.

The bike on auction was handmade in Japan in 1968 and was taken to the UK in 1969, where it was registered by Honda UK, and used by the company in the UK launch of the then new CB750 model. It has been in the same private collection for the past 35 years and was undergoing a restoration when the owner died.

Head of motorcycle sales at H&H Classics, Mark Bryan, says: “This is one of the most historically important bikes we’ve had to auction. It has FEBRUARY 11 2018 become an icon, rated as one of the top landmarks of Japanese automotive technology. It appeared on the cover of Motorcycle Mechanics in May 1969.”

The two missing CB750S bikes suffered sad fates. One went to France and was never seen again and the other was crushed about five years ago in the US.
