India’s best known tigress dies
NEW DELHI: India’s best known tigress, T16 or Machli, died in a Rajasthan national park which had been her home for at least two decades, a forest official said on Thursday.
Machli, which means fish in Hindi, got the name as she was often spotted in and around water in the Ranthambhore National Park.
She also had a “fish-shaped marking” on the left of her face.
She was also called Lady of the Lake and there are iconic photographs of her fighting crocodiles.
Machli was the most photographed tigress in the park and the star of several books and documentaries.
“Machli was very old and had been ailing for some time. For the past four days she had been lying in a single spot in the forest barely conscious,” forest official Yogesh Kumar Sahu said.
“Sad to know of Ranthambore’s iconic tigress Machhali’s passing away,” Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia posted on Twitter.
