Some insightful reading

-

IADMIRE Thabo Mbeki’s intellect and I miss the weekly column he wrote when he was president because it provided insight into what he was thinking.

Mbeki has started writing again and most recently the subject was HIV/Aids. He has been branded an Aids denialist because his views don’t conform to that of mainstream science.

On page 21 is a shortened version of what he wrote. Read it. Then read the response from Salim and Quarraisha Abdool Karim – two people at the forefront of research to find a vaccine. Thereafter, make up your own mind.

Admittedly, it’s heavy reading. But it’s an important issue and one you should form your own opinion on rather than simply relying on what others say.

I suggest you also have a look at the following news stories:

“Mi Casa stole my Chocolate” on page 3.

Growing unhappiness about the release of Janusz Walus on page 4, as well as our opinion on page 20.

And a rather generous donation from Khulubuse Zuma on page 7.

This week, writer Don Makatile visited Lily Mine in Barberton, Mpumalanga, where a container with three workers inside was buried during a rock collapse over a month ago.

It’s a heart-wrenching story and one you must read (page 17).

Finally, there are two pieces that touched me because of their humility.

The first is a letter on page 19 by A Kruger.

The second is an interview with Cardinal Wilfrid Napier. Happy Birthday, Cardinal.
