35 years for Krejcir

ON TUESDAY at the South Gauteng High Court a judge sentenced Czech Radovan Krejcir and his coaccused, Desai Luphondo, to 35 years’ imprisonme­nt.

The matter had been dragging on since last year. While waiting for sentencing, Krejcir was accused of trying to escape from prison and allegedly plotting to kill the judge.

Judge Colin Lamont said the severity of the crimes – kidnapping, attempted murder and attempted drug dealing – warranted severe punishment.

Election registrati­on

VOTER registrati­on takes place next weekend.

The IEC said it was all systems go for residents to register between 8am and 5pm on March 5 and 6, for this year’s local government elections .

Voters need to register at the polling station closest to them. Once registered, voters will be required to vote at that station. KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu delivered the State of the Province address. He emphasised government plans to cut down on spending, saying people must brace themselves for cuts of more than R1 billion in the year ahead.

Although he did not openly say where the cuts would be made, he said the reductions would further squeeze the department­s driving economic developmen­t, which needed more funding for jobcreatio­n initiative­s. Mchunu also touched on government employees owing the National Student Financial Aid Scheme R400 million and urged civil servants to “pay back the money.”
