Singer channels God’s blessings

- CLINTON MOODLEY

AWARD-WINNING gospel artist Shaun P released his new album Channel of this weekend.

Who is Shaun P?

I am the son of God, a husband, father, soul winner, disciple-maker and Earthcracking praiser.

Tell us about the album?

It is based on Acts 20:35. I believe everyone is born to make history and be a blessing to other people. I want this album to inspire and motivate people to know that they can be anyone they want to be and not be afraid of what the world may throw at them.

What inspired you to do the album?

It was something that needed to be done and this was validated by God’s message to me. Growing up in the church and being surrounded by music has motivated me to share my music and its message with others.

What got you interested in gospel music?

I was taken to a special service when I was 14 years old where world-renowned prophet Kim Clement and Israel Houghton were guests. Seeing their talent I realised this was something I wanted to pursue.

What is your favourite track on the album?

Channel of Blessing. The message is so powerful that I am certain that many lives will be touched by it.

What has been the most

memorable career moment?

Leading a service at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in 2010.

How do you juggle music and other obligations?

Its about planning and having a solid structure in place. Balance is one of the most important aspects to survive a busy day. But relying on God for strength, wisdom and direction keeps me going.

Your motto in life?

Dream big because my God is big.

If you had to collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?

Khaya Mthetwa, Israel Houghton, Fred Hammond, Planet Shakers, Hillsong. They are artists I grew up listening to and musicians who impacted on my life.

What misconception do people have about you?

That I might think too much of myself, that I am impatient and arrogant. This is not true. I am just a person who wants to dream big, aim high and work hard to make a change in my community.

What are some of your achievements?

There are so many, but the ones that stand out was being awarded the Crown Gospel Award in 2013 and receiving an international record contract with Dream/Capitol Records US. I was also a South African Music Award nominee in the Urban Gospel category in 2006.

What do you do in your spare time?

Spend time with my family, play squash and enjoy music production and song-writing.
