Boxing all set to have a new boss

suspension.

A source said the bespectacled Maake doubled as acting chief executive and CFO and he worked tirelessly around the clock to make sure that BSA was functional.

He had familiarised himself with boxing matters, which included attending a meeting between Eastern Cape promoters and the Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula, in East London in December.

Senior BSA board member Khulile Radu said: “We had three candidates and it looks like there is somebody that people who conducted interviews settled on.

“It is safe to say there is a man who has been looked at.”

Apparently that person is not an outsider in terms of the sporting fraternity. “He grew up in the sporting fraternity and is currently working at the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture. He is a guy with potential to take the sport to greater heights,” said a source.

Radu said BSA intends to have the chief executive before the end of the year.

“So that we hit the ground running next year. Already we have programmes for next year. If it was rugby I would say we need a flyhalf — the brains of the operations,” said the former professional boxer from Mdantsane.

Regarding the appointment of the CFO, Radu said: “It is in the pipeline.”

BSA chairman Muditambi Ravele said: “We are busy with security checks.”

She explained the lesson they learnt from the issue of Qithi is that proper security checks must be done.

The security department checks criminal records and outstanding criminal cases. She said it was a long process.

“I cannot tell you who has been shortlisted. I think we will have both appointees before the end of the year, but it is actually out of our hands. It is a process that we do not control. It is only the minister who can speed up that process.”
