Legends must empower themselves – Mosimane

Coach calls on corporate to invest in development

- By Neville Khoza

Known for giving coaches a chance in the past and having employed more than 50 coaches to run the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools (PMSS), Pitso Mosimane has urged more legends to come on board.

Mosimane has employed more than 50 coaches to run the programme in the schools which have both girls’ and boys’ teams. Mosimane hired legends as coaches who have a Safa D licence.

“I would like to see many of our legends instead of sitting at home, come and coach. Start here and end at [Kaizer] Chiefs or [Orlando] Pirates, but you need to start,” Mosimane said.

“You can’t say no ‘Remember me scoring a goal?’ Everybody knows you but are you the coach? No. And everybody here who is wearing a tracksuit has a CAF Safa D License, we just do not pick friends...

“It is everybody who is qualified here and we also have our inductions inside where we drill our philosophy where we make sure that they know to sharpen the saw.

“We want to be one of the best programmes that impact football in the schools and outside, because not many people put football in the schools and the only football that is put in the schools is tournaments.”

Mosimane is funding the project from his pockets and hopes corporates will come on board to assist him in seeing the programme successful.

“I do this through my foundation and when you want to talk to business people and say ‘I’m thinking of starting a programme at schools’, they listen to you because they know you, but will say once you start, come to us,” he said.

“And when you start you are on your own. We have about 50 coaches, how do we manage them? There is an office that manages these coaches.

“We have clothing, there is somebody who is in charge of clothing and equipment. So, how are we going to do it?

“You must have people to do that. It has cost us a lot of money, trust me. We have 50 coaches, you have to pay for them. So, we are hoping that some of the people who are in the leadership and sponsorship will come and develop the children.”
