Promotion is still in our hands, says Larsen after defeat
Magesi’s loss to Maritzburg ‘a wake-up call’
Magesi coach Clinton Larsen views their 0-2 defeat at home to Maritzburg United on Saturday as a wake-up call, insisting they were still in control of their fate.
Despite the loss, Magesi are still at the summit of the Motsepe Foundation Championship table, enjoying a fourpoint lead with four games to spare. What helped Magesi to maintain their relatively healthy lead at the top, even with the defeat, is that secondplaced AmaTuks drew goalless away to Venda in a synchronised clash.
“I am happy this [the Maritzburg defeat] happened. This should be a wake-up call for everybody, myself included. Now our focus is on Platinum City Rovers then Milford and it’s not going to be easy but we are still in an advantageous position at the moment and really have it make it count,” Larsen said.
The Magesi coach also insisted that he wasn’t really paying attention to AmaTuks’ games as the focus is on their four remaining fixtures.
Magesi face Platinum City Rovers away tomorrow, before hosting Milford on Sunday.
In their penultimate and final game of the season, they take on Casric Stars and Venda away and home on May 11 and 19 respectively.
“I am not really worried about what they are doing. It’s still in our hands... we had a five-point lead and now it’ sa four-point lead. We just need to get our games over the line. There are no easy games,” Larsen said.
Larsen also conceded they were poor on the day against the Team of Choice, adding the visitors’ goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi helped them a great deal too at the Old Peter
Mokaba Stadium. Maritzburg netted via Andiswa Sithole and Joslin Kamatuka.
“It was a bad day at the office. We looked shaky in defence from the beginning and we were punished for it.
“I don’t think on the balance of play we deserved three points but maybe [we deserved] a draw. I think their Msibi made two very good saves to keep them in the game,” the Magesi mentor said.
