Quite Frankly, Norland should win

Big Myth to win on her Handicap debut

- By Racing Editor

Today’s Vaal Pick 6 has a R176 347 carryover that’s expected to reach a decent R1.2 million. Get On! Statistics prove that you’re more than likely to make a good profit when backing the grandfather-grandson combination of veteran trainer Ormond Ferraris and apprentice jockey Luke Ferraris. The pair impressively teamed up 27 times for 10 victories and seven places last season. They should kick off the new season with another winner when expensive R4 million Franky lines up in today’s BiPot opener in Race 2, a FM Maiden Plate over 1200m on the Outside track. Formerly under the care of Alec Laird, this highly rated daughter of superstar Frankel showed a lot of promise on debut when beaten an inspiring 0.30 lengths into second place by Mazari under Randall Simons. She then disappointed immensely in her next two starts, finishing fifth and then eighth behind Celtic Sea in a Grade 3. The three-year-old meets a moderate field, and is actually weighted to win so is a worthy BiPot banker. The 122-day stint off the racetrack may have done Frankly the world of good, plus she will be aided by the apprentice’s 2.5kg allowance – shouldering just 55kg. Seneca Falls should pose the main threat and can only improve on her debut 3.40-length third place behind Ulla. There’s also a winner from that form line which strengthens her chances. For the Quartet float Frankly and Seneca Falls with as many runners as your budget may allow in this 14-horse field. Ultra-consistent Muzi Yeni finished second on last season’s National Jockeys log and was recently crowned Northern Cape Champion Jockey for the eighth time. He is riding like a man possessed at the moment and it could pay to side with him in Race 6, a MR 74 Handicap over 1600m where he rides Norland for Chris Erasmus. This four-year-old gelding was the victim of a poor draw in his last outing when finishing 3.20 lengths in second behind Gimme Hope Johanna. A run full of merit considering this son of Noordhoek Flyer was drawn No 11 in a 12-horse field. He jumps from No 4 draw today and shoulders 56.5kg. Most encouraging is both career triumphs to date were registered at this course. Ferraris could strike again when he teams up with Sean Tarry-trained Big Myth in Race 7, a MR 68 Handicap over 1600m. She shed her maiden tag by justifying 9-20 favouritism on the fourth time of asking, skipping a memorable 4.25 lengths clear of rivals under regular pilot Lyle Hewitson over 1900m.
