One team’s trash can emerge as another’s star
Morgan Gould
After he was released by Kaizer Chiefs last year, Morgan Gould re-joined SuperSport United. His return has proven to be one of the most memorable career resurrections in local football.
The 34-year-old tough-tackling centre-back has since won the Nedbank Cup and MTN8. He will look to add his third trophy when Matsatsantsa battle TP Mazembe in the final of the CAF Confederations Cup next month.
Thamsanqa Mkhize
Mkhize’s career has blossomed tremendously since he dealt with the disappointment of a failed move to Orlando Pirates, just over a year ago, when Bucs pulled the plug on signing him at the 11th hour despite passing the medical test. Mkhize joined Cape Town City where he has re-launched his career, winning the Telkom Knockout last year and making his Bafana Bafana debut against Burkina Faso last month.
Tshepo Gumede
Gumede, 26, moved from Platinum Stars to Pirates in 2014 but found opportunities hard to come by at the Buccaneers. The Soweto-born defender then moved to Cape Town City where he won the Telkom Knockout in his first season. He has since been a regular in Benni McCarthy’s team.
Reneilwe Letsholonyane
Like Gould, after leaving Chiefs last year, many people thought Letsholonyane’s best days were behind him, but the 35-year-old signed for SuperSport where he has won the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup. The midfielder is in line for his third cup as they are CAF Confed Cup finalists. There was even talk that he could be recalled to Bafana, although that did not materialise.
Robyn Johannes
In 2015 when AmaZulu were still campaigning in the National First Division, they decided against keeping Johannes. The 31-year-old defender linked up with Cape Town City. Now the Citizens’ captain, Johannes has since won the Telkom Knockout and was called up to the national team last month.
