Mother wants action after son is locked in cage

- Benson Ntlemo

A LIMPOPO woman whose 10year-old son was locked in a cage by a man is seething with anger after police allegedly failed to assist her during the ordeal.

The Giyani woman, who cannot be named to protect her son’s identity, said police failed to assist her in her hour of need and until today the alleged perpetrator is walking the streets and has not been arrested for what he did.

She said she was at home when her son, who had just come home from school at noon, said he was going to a spaza shop to buy something.

She was surprised when she was later told her son had been put in a cage near a local car wash business.

“When I went there I found that my son was crying for help and the cage was locked,” the angry mother said.

She said she phoned the police who told her they were not the best people to be contacted.

The mother said she was told to contact emergency services.

She said she asked the police to come and save her son, but they asked her to break the enclosure in which he was kept.

Community members then asked the perpetrator to come and unlock the cage.

The fuming mother later opened a case of kidnapping against the man.

But she was worried that by yesterday the police had not arrested the man.

Limpopo police spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto confirmed the incident and that a case was opened with the Giyani police.

“The docket has been submitted and we are awaiting the prosecutor’s decision whether to charge the man or not,” Otto said.
