Man killed in spaza shop shooting

- Patience Bambalele

THE police have urged foreign nationals running spaza shops in a Gauteng township to remain inside the premises of a police station to minimise chances of being attacked.

The warning comes after a shooting that left a man dead and four others injured in Katlehong on the East Rand on Saturday.

Police are still piecing together information in an attempt to establish the reasons behind the attack that apparently took place at a spaza shop in the area.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Noxolo Kweza confirmed the incident that left one person fatally wounded and four people injured.

“We don ’ t know at this stage what caused the shooting, and who is involved in the shooting. We have been getting different stories, but the police are yet to determine the motive behind the shooting.”

There are also reports that foreign national spaza shops were looted. Kweza said four foreign nationals have been arrested and are set to appear at an unnamed court within 48 hours.

“We have also recovered an unlicensed firearm which was reported stolen at a house-breaking in Bramley in 2008,” she said.

Kweza said the police are monitoring the area and have urged shop owners to stay at the police station for their own safety while investigations into what led to the vandalism continues.

She also confirmed that the situation was calm as a result of a strong police presence in the area.
