Extended format for Khoza Cup

- Sello Rabothata

THE sixth annual edition of the celebrated Zodwa Khoza Women ’ s Soccer Cup will be played in Soweto next month, starting on August 9 with a new format introduced by the organisers.

The tournament is held in honour of the pioneering daughter of Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza, who died in 2006.

Soweto Football Association chairman Phil “Chippa ” Mogodi said 12 clubs will take part in this development tournament, which has been monopolised by Croesus Ladies, a top Johannesburgbased outfit.

“As part of our plan to develop women’s soccer in Soweto and other parts of Gauteng, we have decided to have the tournament played for longer than just one day,” Mogodi said.

“In the past, it used to be played only on August 9 to coincide with National Women ’ s Day celebrations. The whole of August is now recognised as women’s month so the new format is ideal.

“We want to create a bigger platform for our women to get more opportunities to be scouted by clubs in the Sasol League. We will also be inviting Banyana Banyana coach Joseph Mkhonza, his assistant Jerry Laka and other talent scouts.

“There is talent in abundance, this tournament will expose them.”

He said Zodwa had inspired many women to get involved in soccer, as players, administrators and supporters.

“We would like to thank Dr Irvin Khoza and his family for giving us the rights to organise and celebrate the life of a sister who was a role model to many of us, through this tournament.”
