Saints, Dobsonville in Friendship match

-

THE Momentum Friendship Cricket match was brought to life by CSA (Cricket South Africa) and Momentum.

The aim of these matches was to give young talented cricketers from CSA Hubs or Regional Performance Centre (RPC) areas the opportunity to play against traditional cricketing schools.

The match between St Stithians Boys’ College and Dobsonville RPC was the 5th friendship match in which St Stithians Boys’ College has participated.

The first of these matches took place at the Alexandra Cricket Oval in 2016 with massive momentum being generated. A fantastic initiative was created by St Stithians’ U15 side of 2016 when these young cricketers collected second-hand equipment from all age groups in the school.

Bags full of kit were donated to the Alexandra Cricket Club.

This tradition has prevailed as St Stithians cricketers once again donated equipment to the Dobsonville Cricket Club. This experience is a particularly humbling for St Stithians Boys’ College pupils as they marvel at the quality of cricket played despite the many limiting township factors. Both team captains read out the Friendship Pledge before play commenced on a bright sunny day at the Braam Fischer Oval.

St Stithians Boys’ College batted first with both Richard Seletswane and Ayush Ramnarain getting among the runs, scoring 49 and 45 respectively. St Stithians Boys’ College reached a respectable 162/6 in 20 overs. In reply, Dobsonville RPC scored 104/4 in their allotted 20 overs. St Stithians won by 58 runs.

Hats off to Momentum and CSA for this amazing initiative!

We are able to bridge the gap between communities while encouraging the values of true sportsmanship.

We truly believe this is a wonderful experience for both teams, where friends are made for life, and where sport once again displays its unique attributes and why Nelson Mandela sought to unify through the powerful medium of sport.
