“Only accurate rifles are interesting” (a quote attributed to Colonel Townsend Whelen, 1877-1961) is a view I have always subscribed to and ever since I bought my first reloading press (a RCBS Rock Chucker) in 1974, I have tried to optimise every component of a rifle’s system. My journey would have been a much shorter and more successful one if I had a copy of this book when I started off on my quest for accuracy. Described as, “a manual to help the ordinary hunter and sport shooter to have a more accurate shooting platform”, the full-colour and amply illustrated The Accurate Chain does just that.

Firstly the book examines the rifle as a system and analyses what needs to be done to it, to ensure that its critical link in the accuracy chain is not a weak one. Actions, chambers, barrels, triggers, stocks, telescopes, mounts and muzzle brakes/silencers are examined and discussed. In the last part of this section Hendrik explains, in a very practical way, how one cleans a barrel and action, and maintains the stock, as well as gives guidelines on breaking in a barrel.

Part 2 of the book is devoted to reloading kit. It is a comprehensive, knowledgeable and practical look at what you should have in your reloading room and why. It will save those starting off on the reloading route a lot of money and even more time. The most important tip that I can give a new reloader is: Buy the right kit from the start. This section will help you do exactly that.

Finally, and this is where Hendrik’s years of loading experience come to the fore, the book addresses the techniques and processes required to load accurate rifle cartridges. Follow these tips and you will be able to load ammunition which is as accurate as any rounds being produced by the best competition shooters in South Africa.
