Family seek justice for slain father

- Chanel George

The family of Jody Momple, who was allegedly the victim of a hit, have appealed to the Dalton and Wartburg communities for information which would lead to the arrest of his killer.

Momple, a father of three, was killed while leaving his place of employment at the UCL Sugar Mill in Dalton at around 5pm on July 6, 2023.

Although he had three other passengers in his vehicle at the time, it is alleged that the gunman only fired shots at Momple, making investigators believe that it was a hit. Momple died within minutes of being shot multiple times.

On Monday this week, residents of Ward 32 showed their support for his family by participating in a peaceful placard demonstration, calling for his killer to be brought to book.

His wife, Vanessa Momple, said she wants answers and justice because she cannot move forward with her life until she knows why his life was taken so tragically.

“He was well known and I cannot think of one person who might have wanted to kill him. I know he was under a lot of strain at his job and he was in the position of hiring and firing people," said his wife.

Momple said that SAPS has assisted with resources and has gathered some information.

She said the family would like to see justice served for the malice and disregard for human life. She added that it is concerning that hitmen can be hired so easily.

“The family appeals to anyone in the Dalton/ Wartburg area who has any information to please contact the police. A reward has been offered for the arrest of the person involved,” said Momple.

Comment from SAPS was not forthcoming at the time of publication.
