Man killed in N2 accident
An unknown man was killed after he was hit by a vehicle on the N2 highway between Lawaaikamp and Thembalethu on Monday 12 November. The man allegedly leapt in front of the vehicle that was travelling in the direction of Pacaltsdorp.
According to the driver of the vehicle, a white Nissan Sentra, the man came from the direction of Zone 9, Thembalethu, and jumped over the barricades towards his vehicle. The driver said it was almost as if the man wanted to commit suicide, judging by the way he threw himself in front of the vehicle. "He just jumped in front of my vehicle and I didn't even have a chance to speak to him after I pulled over. He passed way on the scene," said the driver. The driver added that the deceased had visible scars, which didn't seem to be caused by the accident. "It seemed as if the scars were caused by a sharp object before the accident." The driver did not sustain any injuries,
According to one of the eyewitnesses, who lives nearby, the man was seen going into one of the yards close to the freeway before the accident. The eyewitness said the man looked agitated and he muttered few words to them before jumping the fence and heading to the freeway. "He then dove in front of a white vehicle and that was the last time we saw him alive," the witness recalled.
Thembalethu Police communications officer, Captain Dumile Gwavu, said the estimated age of the deceased is 35. The Thembalethu detectives are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
