The Western Cape Minister of Health, Prof Nomafrench Mbombo, officially opened the new Thembalethu Clinic on Monday morning, 19 June, during a special ceremony. A total of R64-million was spent to build the spacious, state-of-the-art facility where health services commenced in middle May. The new clinic replaces the old Thembalethu Clinic which is closing down.
The official opening was attended by a number of dignitaries, including George Mayor Melvin Naik. Addressing guests, Mbombo urged the community of Thembalethu to safeguard the clinic and use it with care. “I have certified that the building is complete and that the services are running. What is important is for the community to take responsibility for the clinic as their own asset - not to burn it.
The same goes for the staff. The staff members are also an asset and a mutually respectful relationship must be built where the staff and community treat one another with dignity,” said Mbombo.
The modern facility with an area of 3 490m2 has an attractive entrance that features a beautiful wall mosaic depicting a bustling street scene with the Outeniqua mountain in the background.
The services delivered at the clinic are primary health care, dentistry and rehabilitation. Between 400 and 500 patients can be handled here daily. The clinic hours are 07:30 to 16:00 on weekdays. Contact the clinic on
