Swing into spring with a song in your heart
Winter is done and spring is in the air, so let music put a spring in your step. Let’s celebrate the arrival of greenery and blossoms in our beautiful natural surroundings with Carpe Musicam!, the Southern Cape’s favourite little orchestra, presenting their popular annual Spring/Swing is in the Air series of concerts in St Mark’s Cathedral on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 October at 19:00.
On the varied concert programme is an exciting miscellany of spring and swing-themed musical treats. They vary from Japanese traditional music played on a Chinese traditional instrument(!) to a brand-new arrangement and orchestration of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, which explores rock, swing and
Latin interpretations of Gershwin’s immortal theme, and allows drummer Kevi Levin to show off his skills in an extended drum solo.
Canadian-born soprano Ashley Alt will be making her George debut, ably assisted by CMO!’s own soprano soloist, Ninette Smit. We hope they will work together again later in the year.
Child soprano Leticia van As will also be lifting her voice in song to welcome spring with Linda Ronstadt’s beautiful song Winter Light.
Tickets are R80, and R20 for school pupils and are available on a reserved seat basis at the Cathedral office from 08:00 to 13:00 on week days - or you can take pot luck at the door on the night. As usual, the enthusiastic Anglican Women’s Fellowship ladies will serve their tasty refreshments during the interval and the Friends of the Cathedral will be at the door to welcome you. - Compiled by David Stevens (Convenor – Friends of the Cathedral) with invaluable professional input from Norman Carless, Director of Music and conductor of the Orchestra.
