New rules for obtaining passports must be welcomed

-

FORMER chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng joining a political party, and also standing in line to contest the presidential election in 2024, is premature. According to legal experts, the laws governing retired judges are very clear. They remain judges, even though they have retired, and may be called at any time to serve for short periods as judges and for other reasons. They cannot become members of a political party or stand for election. They have taken a legal pledge to maintain and protect the image and integrity of the judges’ code of conduct. There are many other rules governing the conduct of judges and running for president of the country is certainly not allowed. | ANON

The Minister of Home Affairs must be applauded for the improvements now required to obtain a South African passport. No more standing in queues, calling and making appointments. New security features were introduced to prevent fraud and illegal entry. His entire speech pertained to how Bangladeshis and Pakistanis illegally entered our country using fake passports or hiding in fire escape routes at our airports. Almost 90% of Pakistanis and Bangladeshis are illegally in South Africa. They will never be able to enter, and if trying to leave they will be arrested at the airport. A click of a button on the computer will show if you are illegal or genuine. | ANON

We are advised continuously and repeatedly not to abuse electricity, but… ANC'S ethekwini Municipality staff leave rows of street lights on because they do not know ( to) switch for weather, whereby lights comes on at night and off during the day. Hundreds of street lights are left on in Phoenix in main roads. | ZAHIR DANBAR

For the last few years, it has definitely been more difficult than before to legally evict tenants due to the newly established and very impractical PIE Act which was meant to theoretically make the legal process easier for both landlords and tenants, but which in practice just makes it incredibly more difficult for landlords. It was not designed with the notion in mind that renting is a business. It was designed with the notion that renting out is now a charity. In fact, it was most likely designed in such a way to con landlords, and it is the way it is because it's the government's way of making private taxpayers/ landlords responsible for providing adequate shelter to the homeless because the government does not want to build houses or do anything themselves to help the homeless. | MARK DAVIDSON

To look at President Ramaphosa standing at the Women’s Day conference in Richmond is a joke, especially after his very incompetent Minister of Police handled the matter of the women raped at a mine just days ago. Why has he not removed this minister as the country is overrun with putrid and heinous crimes? I’m sick and tired of the ANC now. They must go. | AB

Education as a whole has been disregarded here, according to the shameful needs and wants of the uneducated and total disrespect for knowledge that the whole world uses to its advantage. If you want to make it, you will. If you pay for it or get it for free, there are thousands of successful graduates from these institutions. These universities are under siege by ungrateful and undeserving students and lies from the government. This has come from grass roots in the education of our people and is just brought to light when the results of your education do not meet the dreams in your head. | WAIDE GUERINI
