Shock after witnessing fatal incident
WHILE details were sketchy yesterday, those who saw what seemed like three cars racing downhill in Msinga, and one of these land bonnet first on a house, said they were still in shock.
According to two witnesses, the tar road forks and becomes gravel.
“When one of the cars tried to take the right fork, the driver lost control, veering off the road and landing nose first on a house,” a witness said.
When they arrived at the car, there were empty beer bottles inside and they could smell alcohol.
Two schoolchildren died in the crash. It’s believed the pupils from Izwelinjani Secondary School were returning from a sports day and a teacher was giving them a lift home.
Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the driver of the VW Polo that the pupils were travelling in fled the scene on foot.
“They were travelling on Hholwane Road when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and it overturned. Msinga police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and the circumstances around the incident.”
Mbele said the driver was still being sought by police.
She said two pupils were taken to hospital.
Area councillor Mthandeni Myeza said the road was problematic, especially with drivers speeding.
Education Department spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa said: “We send our condolences to the families. The matter is now in the hands of the police and we will do our best to work with police in finalising the matter.”
