Top marketing student helping peers with stats
Committed 22-year-old Kwanele Mduba has taken it upon himself to mentor other students battling with the complicated subject of statistics, while pursuing his BTech Marketing degree at Walter Sisulu University in East London.
The cum laude student, who has a passion for statistics, dreams of one day obtaining his PhD as a market research analyst.
Mduba’s passion for teaching began when he was a pupil at Ekuphumleni High School, where the principal made it compulsory for top achievers to step in when a teacher was not available.
“The top pupil in each subject would stand in front of the class and facilitate.
“I got used to it and developed a passion for teaching,” he said.
Mduba formed KM Statistic Tutorials in 2018, which focuses on statistics or quantitative techniques.
“When I was doing my second year in 2018, I formed a STATS 18 group of 10 members where I started facilitating for the first time.
“The pass rate was 100%. “I did another in 2019, STATS 19, with 18 members, and another 100% pass rate,” he said.
Mduba now has a STATS 20 group, where he helps fellow students with quantitative techniques in their marketing course.
The lockdown has not put a stop to Mduba’s tutorials — he turned to WhatsApp and started a YouTube channel to help his fellow students.
“I realised that statistics is a challenge to many students, even outside Walter Sisulu University, so I decided make a YouTube channel.”
A career as a market research analyst involves gathering data to analyse preferences, needs and buying habits of consumers, in a variety of sectors.
Growing up in Whittlesea, and raised by single mother Funiwe and his older brother Thulani, Mduba is passionate about helping others in need.
“I want to also accommodate students from other universities besides WSU.
“I would require a building, equipment such as projectors and computers and furniture.”
The cum laude student said hard work was the key to his academic achievement.
“I disciplined myself, had a positive mindset, believed in myself and I worked hard. I was an all-nighter,” he said.
