- ROSS ROCHE rossr@dispatch.co.za

Border Motorsport is set to end off what has been a fantastic year at the East London Grand Prix Track with the popular, annual Border 100 race on Saturday.

The Border 100 is the oldest annual race meeting in the country and sees competitors come from all over to battle it out.

They will follow that up on Sunday with the Top Speed Run which will be a fundraiser for the circuit.

“It is going to be a fantastic way to end a wonderful year,” said Border Motorsport PR Dave Kirkman.

“We have the annual Border 100 on Saturday and then the Top Speed Run on Sunday, so it is going to be a very exciting weekend.

“And what is even more good news is we have just got our draft lease agreement from BCM, which is a big step forward, even though it is not a final document we have got it. So to end the year with a draft lease that we can look at is fantastic.”

This weekend will see the 84th showing of the Border 100 and a strong field of 120 entrants will be taking part in the fun day of action.

This includes over 40 Modified Saloons, 35 Historic Saloons, 15 Motorcycles, 13 Classic Motorcycles and over 20 Open Tops.

“We have a really lovely bunch of guys coming down to take part,” said Kirkman.

“We have 10 Porsche from KZN, mostly GT3s which are really wonderful cars to look at, we have two Chevrons, a B16 and B19 coming from out of town, which are fantastic little racing cars that were built in the 60s and 70s, so it is going to be great to see.

“We are doing bikes and car sprint races in the morning and then we have the Border 100 for bikes, followed by the Border 100 for cars in the afternoon.”

In all the Grand Prix circuit has enjoyed a fantastic year, which has seen some massive events, and Border Motorsport will hope to see it finish in style over this weekend.

“It has been a great year at the track. We have quite a few new committee members on board who are doing wonderful things on the marketing side of things. We have had a really positive year, with I think more success in this year than we have had in the last three years,” said Kirkman.

“The highlight was the SA Historic Grand Prix, and we are now looking forward to February when we will have the Historic Grand Prix bikes for the first two weeks in Feb, so this is a truly wonderful way to end things off for 2018.”

The action gets under way on Saturday at 10am and should finish by 5.30pm, while Sunday will start at 10am and should finish by 3pm.

Entry will cost R30 for adults and R10 for kids, with a funfilled family day on the cards.
