THREE apparently drunk would-be patrons of a popular Beacon Bay pub who were told it was closing time are accused of going around the back and breaking in.

Police confirmed they were searching for three men for causing malicious damage to property at Monty’s Pub last Monday at around midnight.

Images of the raiders were put on the pub’s Facebook page and they were recognised, said the pub’s manager, who would only give her name as Heather.

She told the Dispatch the pub had called the last round when the three pitched up at the door.

She said the bouncer had turned them away.

“They went to the back and kicked down the cage storeroom gate, but could not get through the kitchen door because the burglar gate was locked.”

She said the men then picked up a spade and tried to bend the burglar gate, but the spade broke.

Heather said the trio then left but not before ripping off their “do not trespass” sign from the wall. She said this was all caught by the store’s CCTV camera.

The pub then put the suspect’s faces on social media, “and they were recognised”.

“It’s possible (they were drunk) because no normal person would do that on a Monday night. This matter is being dealt with internally.”

Mdantsane police spokesman Captain Nkosikho Mzuku said: “SAPS can confirm that a case of malicious damage to property is under investigation by Beacon Bay SAPS following an incident that was reported at an East London pub last week.”

Mzuku said: “The circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear, but police are looking at all possible leads. There are no arrests as yet and investigation continues.”
