Why wait for Xmas to fine?

-

I WAS delighted by Wednesday’s front page report “Traffic fines up for Xmas”. But why only at the Christmas period?

May I suggest 1x spotter with radio and three to four uniformed traffic officers be stationed, say 50 metres from the Chamberlain Road/Pearce Street traffic lights in Berea right now. There they’d have the opportunity to fine at least 10 cellphone offenders per hour, and 10 non-compliers with the traffic lights per hour. This could net R30 000 in fines per hour. Then a visit to the taxi rank opposite Wong’s Corner would offer delightful picking for unroadworthy vehicles, inconsiderate drivers, and overloaded vehicles. This could “swell” the collection level to R40 000 per hour.

With increased revenue, more traffic officers could be employed and I could happily help point out many more traffic intersections for many more revenue gathering opportunities. — Martin Goldswain, via e-mail

The blatant disregard by motorists of red robots and stop streets has reached epic proportions.

Last Friday in the space of 35 minutes, I counted 18 vehicles going through red lights at the corner of Camden and Settlers Way and on the corner of Buffaloview Road and Jan Smuts Ave no fewer than 12 skipped the stop street. Also, driving from Greenfields to Nahoon I saw 11 motorists going through red robots in 15 minutes.

If I alone see this kind of thing imagine what is happening in the rest of our city. It would be interesting to know how many fines have been issued for such transgressions this year and why do the authorities seem to be turning a blind eye. — Name supplied, via e-mail
