EC tops stats list for death by beatings in SA

YOU are more likely to be beaten to death in parts of the Eastern Cape than anywhere else in the country.

Your chances of dying in a road crash are increased if you are in certain parts of Limpopo and the Northern Cape.

Data gleaned from Statistics SA’s Mortality and Causes of Death 2015 released in Pretoria yesterday shows the Eastern Cape tops the list of assault-related deaths.

These accounted for 22.3% of the province’s 68 423 recorded deaths in 2015.

The Northern Cape and Western Cape tied for second place, with 21.6% of their respective totals of 13 758 and 49 932 deaths.

The two most violent municipali­ties in the country were in the Eastern Cape, with Alfred Nzo topping the deaths by assault list at 27.7% followed by O R Tambo at 27.2%.

Siyanda municipali­ty in the Northern Cape was third at 25.9%‚ followed by Central Karoo in the Western Cape at 25.6%‚ Pixley ka Seme in the Northern Cape at 24.8% and Chris Hani in the Eastern Cape at 23.3%.

The province with the fewest assault-related deaths is Limpopo‚ with just 7.3% of its 46 923 deaths in 2015 attributed to this cause.

However‚ Limpopo features at the top of the deaths by road accidents list at 31.9 %‚ followed by Northern Cape at 28.9%.

At 41%‚ the Waterberg municipali­ty in Limpopo leads the list of deaths by road crashes.

The municipali­ty with the second highest road death toll was John Taolo Gaetsewe in the North West at 38.4%, followed by the Greater Sekhukhune municipali­ty in Limpopo at 37.3%.

Gauteng recorded the fewest road accident-related deaths at just 2.5% of its 98 191 deaths, followed by the Western Cape at 6.8%. — TMG
