Wits no match for Stars

-

PLATINUM Stars were downed by their former striker Eleazar Rodgers' penalty when Bidvest Wits beat them 1-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday night.

In the wake of the draw, Cavin Johnson's men now occupy 10th spot with nine points from eight matches thus far.

As early as the 16th minute, the match had dramatic moments when Dikwena goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela was shown a red card when he committed a foul on Elias Pelembe.

The referee awarded the Clever Boys a penalty and he then awarded the visitors a penalty which Rodgers converted with ease.

However, in the 35th minute, substitute goalkeeper Steve Hoffman produced a fine save to deny Mogakolodi Ngele from a close-range attempt.

With five minutes remaining in the opening half, Henrico Botes had a wonderful opportunity on the counter but he failed to hit the target.

In the second stanza, Hoffman was the man to deny Gavin Hunt's men as Rodgers took a shot, but it went to the goalkeeper’s hands in the 68th minute.

Midfielder Thabang Monare also tried to beat Hoffman, but his welltaken shot went wide to the right of the goal.

In the end, there were no clear opportunities for either side as the Braamfontein-based club claimed the full three points.

Following the victory, the Clever Boys are now sitting comfortably at the top of the log table with 19 points from seven matches. — Backpage Media
