These are the two Stormers to watch in the Rainbow Cup SA

- WYNONA LOUW wynona.louw@inl.co.za

WITH the Rainbow Cup South Africa set to kick off this weekend, it’s to be expected that SA players will want to go out there and make the most of their time on the pitch after a few tough weeks filled with all that uncertainty.

The Preparation Series offered a good few moments, enough so to give us something to look forward to in the next competition.

From a Stormers perspective, here are two factors, or players rather, to get excited about (for different reasons) ahead of their opener against the Sharks at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday (2pm kickoff). Pieter-Steph du Comeback

Not much needs to be said here, really.

The Springbok superstar is ready, and after missing out on seeing him in action for more than a year, few sentences related to the game could be sweeter than that one.

Whether the reigning World Rugby Player of the Year will feature off the bench or in a starting capacity, either way, just seeing him go again will be good enough.

While the natural feeling would probably be to not expect too much from Du Toit – given his extended time away from the field and the nature of his complicated injury – he has shown us before that he is not exactly one to ease back into business.

He goes right back in, in a way that will have you thinking he was never sidelined.

The work-rate shoots right back up there to pre-injury levels.

Will this time be the same? Who

knows. But we have good reason to believe it won’t be disappointing. It’s Du Toit, after all.

Abner van Follow-Up

Considering how superb his starting debut was in the Stormers’ final game of the Preparation Series against the Lions, the flyhalf has quite the follow-up to produce if he gets a chance this weekend.

With his fine contributions on attack, his flawless work off the tee and the overall efficiency with which he handled the game, he is definitely one to watch when the Stormers get back on to the field.

The fact that he could deliver a performance like that, given the issues the Stormers have faced at No 10, makes him even more exciting as a prospect.

Could he be the answer? That can’t be deduced from just one game. But that one game was certainly enough to have Stormers fans hoping for the best.
