PORSCHE’S 718 Boxster and Cayman GTS models just became more desirable with the release of the new 4.0 versions.

The new two-seaters ditch the 2.5litre four-cylinder turbopetrol unit for a detuned version of Stuttgart’s 4-litre normally aspirated six-cylinder engine that’s found in the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder.

In its GTS state of tune, expect the 4-litre direct injection boxer motor to produce 294kW, which is 25kW more than the previous GTS. Incidentally, 0-100km/h comes up in 4.5 seconds, according to factory claims.

VISCERAL NATURE

The new Boxster and Cayman GTS models are fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox and a sports exhaust system with dynamic damper control to make the most of that 7 800rpm redline.

Porsche has done all the right things with the chassis too.

The GTS models sit 20mm lower to the ground than the regular Boxster and Cayman, while Porsche Active Suspension Management sports suspension is fitted as standard, along with Porsche Torque Vectoring that’s enabled by a mechanical limited slip rear differential. Porsche’s Sport Chrono package, with Porsche Active Drivetrain Mounts, is part of the deal.

VISUAL CUES

The cars feature satin-gloss black 20-inch alloy wheels, and dark contrast colouring for the spoiler lip, front air intake, fog light lenses and rear light covers, while the front apron and lower rear bumper get a sportier design.

You’ll also find black contrasting elements inside, along with dark Alcantara upholstery for the sports seats. Pay a little extra for the GTS interior package, and you can opt for a Carmine Red or Chalk colour scheme for the seat belts, rev counter and all decorative seams.

On the infotainment front, the GTS 4.0 models ship with the Porsche Communication Management 17.8cm touch screen system, and the options list includes Bose and Burmester premium surround sound systems.

South African deliveries are expected to start around mid-year, with pricing to be announced nearer to launch.
