Circuit racing bonanza set for Killarney on Saturday
Race day will also host a program for less fortunate children
HE ACTIVITY at Killarney on Saturday starts with a morning practice session as a lead-up to the sixth round of the Western Cape main circuit title chase on August 10.
It will then be followed at 3pm by Drive to Live, an outreach programme for underprivileged youngsters.
With the championship having passed the halfway mark, competitors are now able to single out their main opposition and act accordingly. This is proving particularly difficult in the V8 Masters class where former champion Marcel Angel is determined to regain the title.
But while he took an early lead, his initial concerns were about opposition from reigning champion Fabio Tafani, the driver who unseated him in 2012. However it was suddenly Charles Arton who surged ahead after consistent early season performances, followed by an excellent third round. Unfortunately Arton then had to miss the
Tfourth leg and Angel found himself in command again.
While there is now only one point separating Arton and Tafani in second and third places, Angel’s most serious new challenge could come from Jurgen zu Bentheim.
After failing to score in the opening rounds, Zu Bentheim bounced back with a magnificent double victory in the third round, followed by a pair of second places in the fourth.
The Jive GTi Challenge events are notable for other reasons. Firstly, while divided into three classes, it's the smaller and marginally slower Class B and C competi- tors who remain as closely bunched as protesters on a march.
They also have Golf driver Andrea Bate, one of the county's leading fast ladies, who is active in class B.
Other events that day include races for Makita Supercars, Big Foot Express Sports and GT cars, Formula Libre, Charl Elec. Fine Cars, Mutlu Classic Cars and Mike Hopkins Superbikes, as well as Powersport, classic and Clubman bikes.
The race meeting on August 10 will incorporate a variety of Woman's Day activities, with free admission for the ladies too.
