Two men shot and killed in Langa blood zone
TWO weeks after three people were shot and killed in Langa, two men were shot and killed in the same area this week.
Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said Langa police were called to the crime scene early on Monday where they found the victims with gunshot wounds. They were declared deceased at the scene.
“The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident this morning in Tony Yengeni Street, Langa, at about 12.05, where two adults males were shot and fatally wounded, are under investigation,” said Twigg.
Langa Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Sindile Moya it had engaged the police and requested more police visibility. He said they were also engaging with other stakeholders for the establishment of more neighbourhood watches to assist the Langa Safety Patrol.
“We are imploring residents to come forward and report these incidents. This will assist the police in ensuring that perpetrators are behind bars and these guns are confiscated. This in turn results in a safe community where we can all live.
“We might have all the neighbourhood watches we need, but it is not possible to to be vigilant throughout the night as these matters creep up unexpectedly,” he said.
Newly elected ward 51 councillor Thembelani Nyamakazi said that gun violence in the area was becoming a cause for concern.
“We have noted the increasing trend in the use of guns, especially in my ward, where most people have died from being shot.
“This year we have had a substantial number of people being shot and this has created a tense living environment as the residents in the areas are now living in fear, not knowing who might be the following person to get shot.
“We believe that most of these guns are illegal and they manage to be in the hands of those that are perpetrators of crime. We need police to resume their responsibility and ensure that communities are rid of guns.
“However, crime fighting needs a collective effort of different stakeholders, including the community, by ensuring that such incidents are reported to the police,” he said.
Nyamakazi said his priority was to implement youth development programmes that would ensure that young people were not involved in criminal activities.
