ARTSCAPE CHIEF EXECUTIVE TO RECEIVE CHARLOTTE MAXEKE AWARD
ARTSCAPE chief executive Marlene le Roux is to be honoured with the Charlotte Maxeke award, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture announced yesterday.
The Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke Institute in partnership with the department will host the fourth Bring Her Up : Women Of Firsts Awards ceremony tomorrow in Gauteng.
The award was a moment to honour women in various spheres who have demonstrated sheer determination, leadership and creativity in their work and contribution towards society, the department said.
“Artscape CEO Marlene le Roux is one of the prestigious recipients as the first woman of colour to take the helm at Cape Town’s biggest theatre. The award will recognise her as a tireless advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities and the youth and equally honour her lifelong journey in the arts and education, leading the Artscape Theatre as one of the most formidable institutions in the work of arts and culture in the country.”
The government declared 2021 as the Year of Charlotte Maxeke with the theme #BringOthersUp.
“This initiative is hugely influenced and echoing Mme Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke’s words, when she said: “This work is not for yourselves, kill that spirit of self and do not live above your people but live with them, and if you can rise, bring someone with you.”
Le Roux will share the awards stage with an array of incredible women.
They include Wits University vice-chancellor Dr Judy Dlamini, recognised for establishing the Female Academic Leaders Fellowship Fund, and Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba, for her leadership in the Covid-19 response and vaccination drive by that province.
Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will accept her award from New York as this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
The ceremony, at 10am, will be available via live streaming on the Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke YouTube and Facebook pages: https://www. youtube.com/channel/UCkyIJgThG3JfKLq4hu_PBXQ.
