The Kirstenbosch Lions Club conferred the following awards on outstanding individuals
LIONS Club Of Kirstenbosch , the largest lions club in South Africa, is the most diverse club in terms of religion, race and culture and is part of the world’s largest philanthropic organization with more than 1.3 million members in more than 206 countries.
On 20 July and at the Crystal Towers Marriot Hotel 6.30pm, the KIRSTENBOSCH club conferred the following awards on outstanding individuals.
The Melvin Jones Fellowship:
The Melvin Jones Fellowship is the highest honor given by LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL bestowed on patrons of humanity, possessed of a worldview and who performs deeds that outlast a lifetime.
This year the recipient is Dennis Goldberg , one of the two remaining Rivonia trialists alive, served a term of imprisonement for a period of 22 years for his relentless fight against apartheid.
He holds more than one doctorate bestowed on him.
The Louis Volks Humanitarian Award This is the highest recognition, presented in South Africa and is of local content, presented to a lions club member or non member who through their involvement in the community have enhanced the quality of lives of many.
This year the recipients are:
Mrs Yasmina Abrahams of Jabulani Feed the Nation in Parkwood where meals are served on close to 400 people a day. For many, it is the first meal of the day. Iftaars nightly, Mass and street iftaars sees close to 26 000 people being served.
Mr Shukoor Mowzer of Nakhlistan , who 35 years ago vowed not to prepare lavish eid lunches saw him start feeding people with two pots of food to 169 pots of food in Ramadaan 2019, serving 85 000 people.
