Watered-down favours up costs

- BASIL LOUW Rondebosch

IT WOULD appear that the DA is now following in the ANC’s footsteps in the way they manipulate our rates and taxes.

The new surcharge on water supplied is ludicrous but they make it sound like they are doing us a favour in maintaining a supply of water.

Householders have to pay for the removal of sewage. The charge is calculated from the readings taken from the usage recorded by our water meters.

However, if the council is recycling sewage to supplement the main supply, they are sending back much of what we have already paid for.

Because most of what now flows through our meters is only fit for flushing toilets, we are once again charged a fee for sewage removal.

They also frown on drawing water from well points and boreholes because it will draw off much of the groundwater. My guess this is because the council is hell-bent on tapping the aquifers that maintain that groundwater.

This is likely to produce sink holes so we should have our property fully insured.

I have converted all my downpipes so that I can collect as much rain water as possible. The council will probably outlaw this too so that any “free” water that falls from the sky will go down the drains into their system. Then we have to pay for them to deliver it to us.

Do we have any honest politicians in this country who strive for positions so that they can serve the people and be respected for what they do ?
