‘Idols SA’:

It’s down to the wire for the final two

- MUNYA VOMO

OKAY, I’ll be the first to admit it. I did not see last Sunday’s result coming. Thami and Noma are the final two contestants in the 2016 instalment of Idols SA. It takes us back to last year’s fight between Mmatema and Karabo. Although a lot of people thought Mmatema would win, Karabo took it home.

Is this year the time for the first black woman to win this show? Only time will tell because, come this Sunday, all roads lead to Carnival City where a winner will be crowned.

Tebogo’s ejection was a shock, but for someone who had come to the show three times previously, he finally got what he needed because finishing third was not a bad thing at all. There are so many things that he can now achieve off the Idols SA steam.

Back to Thami and Noma. The competition is tight because they both can sing just about anything that’s thrown their way. They have proved week in week out that they are diverse and the fans like them. Thami is the show’s poster boy. With his good looks you can tell that he is a hit with the ladies and that should count for something. The icing on this scenario is that he is good and that’s surprising because he was on the show before and did not do any of what he’s doing now. So for Thami, the girl vote is on lock.

That means that Noma has a lot of proving to do. Unathi even mentioned that South African ladies tend not to support each other when voting, although she took that back. So who then is voting for Noma?

Someone theorised that since she is a teacher, perhaps Noma’s pupils, her parents and people in her immediate community must be holding voting vigils every night to support their own.

Whether that’s true or not does not matter, just that people are voting in their droves. So many that she manages to top Tebogo who was a favourite from the start. If she should win, let it be because she is good, not because of we need a black woman to win.

Every other year I like guessing who’ll win, but this time, count me out because this show has become so unpredictable. May the best singer win, and we look forward to their albums after the show. Please, may we also have better songwriters because those singles were not at all convincing.

On a sad note, Sunday will be the last time we will see Gareth Cliff as he’s resigned from the show. Here’s hoping he has an epic exit and does something on stage with some memorable clips of his time on the show over the years.

Idols SA finale on Sunday at 5pm on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161).
