HAMAD Medical Corporation’s (HMC) emergency departments (ED) at Hamad General Hospital (HGH) and Al Wakrah Hospital (AWH) received a total of 745 cases on the third day of Eid Al-Fitr on Tuesday. Most of these cases were related to the gastrointestinal system as a result of change in food habits following the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The HGH ED received 355 male and 160 female patients of whom only 12 were admitted while the AWH attended to a total of 230 cases, including 167 males and 63 females of which 22 were admitted. In both the hospitals, there were no critical cases and ranged from simple to moderate.

It is worth to note that the cases are not related to coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Speaking to Qatar Tribune, HMC Consultant of Emergency Medicine, Medical Toxicologist and Vice-Chairman for

Corporate Affairs in the HMC Department of Emergency Medicine Dr Galal Alessai said, “Emergency departments are always busy, though the numbers keep fluctuating.”

According to him, last year on same days the number was higher than this year. “This is perhaps because now people know when to use emergency departments. The public is more aware now than last year,” he said. Dr Alessai further said that it was normal for the number of males visiting the emergency department to be higher than that of females during this period.

According to him, most of the cases received were related to gastrointestinal system, which is associated with change in food habits after the Holy Month. He said, “Normally, it takes a few days for people to adjust to the new routine.”

According to him, road mishap cases and critical cases were also less this year.

Dr Alessai urged people not to increase intake of food containing sugar and to try to improve food habits. He advised them to drink more water in order to stay hydrated, especially as it is summer season. “People with comorbidities should also take their medication on time,” he said.

Dr Alessai also advised people to stay home and follow the instructions of the Ministry of Public Health to curb the spread of COVID-19.
