Over 48.2mn gallons of rainwater removed

-

More than 48.2mn gallons of rainwater had been removed in a 24-hour period, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) said yesterday afternoon.

A total of 302 tankers were used for the work and some 6,877 trips were made for this purpose, the MME tweeted.

The MME said 63 water pumps were used to clear the rainwater in the said period and the job involved 591 workers. Also, 645 emergency calls were received, it added.

The country received moderate to heavy rain on Saturday and showers were reported from some places yesterday as well.

“Our rain emergency teams were working throughout the night to drain out rainwater from roads and residential areas.

Our operation room is receiving emergency calls round the clock to respond instantly to the situation. Thanks for your patience and co-operation,” the MME said in another tweet earlier in the day.

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal), too, tweeted a picture of its emergency room yesterday morning, where work was continuing round the clock to monitor drainage networks and respond to water accumulation reports.

Doha and adjacent areas experienced light to moderate rain yesterday, while thundershowers were reported from other parts of the country - prompting the authorities concerned to issue safety advisories, especially while driving.

Today’s forecast by the Qatar Met department says thundery rain, strong winds and high seas are expected in offshore areas. The wind speed may go up to 30 knots in these areas during thundershowers, with the sea level rising to 10ft.

Though there is no warning for inshore areas, there is a chance of scattered rain in these places today.
