Change to QMMF statute garners strong support from officials
Officials have praised the new statutes of the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) adopted by Minister of Culture and Sports HE Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser al-Ali, which aims to empower young people and provide them an opportunity to choose new board of directors through a general assembly.
Now member clubs can vote for elect a new board. The new statute said that the current board, chaired by QMMF president Abdulrahman al-Mannai, will prepare for holding the elections within three months. At a press conference yesterday, al-Mannai said that he was looking to change the statute ever since he presided over the federation.
“It’s important to have an an official umbrella, under which all parties involved in the sport, can meet and discuss ways to develop motor sports. The new statute will also enhance the independence of the federation, similar to other sports association. It empower youth who can now also contribute to managing the federation and its member clubs,” he said.
Al-Mannai said that the upcoming elections will be the first ever to be held to choose a new board for QMMF, adding that the amendments were very well received by the international federations for auto and for motorcycle.
Qatar Sports for all Federation (QSFA) president Abdulrahman Musellam al-Dosari said the decision to establish a general assembly, like in all other federations, will turn Qatar into one of the leading and highly-innovative countries in the region for sports. He paid tribute to the current board for their attempt to change the statute, saying it reflected their commitment to develop the sport.
Al-Dosari revealed that the QMMF, in talks with the Ministry of Culture and Sports, expressed its desire to change the statute in order to give youth more power in the decision making process by holding a general assembly. He said that the ministry has adopted the amendments after studying them carefully from a legal standpoint, to ensure it was in line with the sports law No 1 of 2016 issued by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani which said that a general assembly would be the authority for choosing new boards.
The QSFA president said that the ministry supported the initiative of QMMF because it was in line with the strategy of the ministry in terms of empowering young people, considering that the presence of the General Assembly will enhance their participation in the decision-making process.
There needs to be a minimum of three clubs in the General Assembly in order to hold elections, which al-Dosari said was Al Sadd, Mawater Center, Qatar SC, and Losail circuit. He noted that the ministry will oversee the elections in order to ensure all the rules and legal measures are taken.
Vice Chairman of Losail Circuit Sports Club Khalid al-Rumaihi said that having a General Assembly will promote the federation’s independence and will encourage youth to play a bigger role in the decision-making process. “The new system paves the way for more clubs to join the General Assembly in the future. I want to thank the QMMF for this move as it will enhance the youth’s capabilities.” al-Rumaihi said.
